Description
The Wesleyan Reformed Church, including No 21, is a former caretaker's house now serving as a private dwelling. It was built in 1863 by Messrs John Ives and Son of Shipley. The church is constructed of ashlar stone and features a Welsh slate roof. It is a single-storey building with a basement and has a three-bay symmetrical front with an open pediment over a central projection. A deep plinth supports a flight of stone steps, which have ashlar side walls leading to a central doorway. This doorway is adorned with engaged Doric columns and flanked by pilasters. Above is a Doric entablature and a blocking course topped by an oculus on scrolled supports with a cornice above. An inscription in raised capitals reads: "HALL LANE CHAPEL 1863." The flanking windows are round-arched, featuring marginal glazing, consoles to the sills, and archivolts on lugged stops. There is a moulded eaves cornice and a hipped roof. The six-bay side elevations also have round-arched windows with marginal glazing, while square-headed basement windows are present. Set back at the rear is No 21, which has a left side of two bays with sash windows and a door.
Inside, the church retains its original pews, with doors and sides featuring round-arched panels. The furnishings at the front appear to date from the later 19th century. There are pedimented doors at the front and entrances on each side at the rear from a central lobby. The building was designed to seat 400 people and cost £1,500 to construct.
