Description
The Shipley War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921 by Messrs Wright and Son, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Creetown granite and has an octagonal plan. The memorial is situated on the site of a former bandstand, elevated on a mound surrounded by flower beds and enclosed by octagonal kerbing that was reused from the bandstand structure. The memorial features a Latin cross with capped terminals and a stylised sword in relief, set on a slender tapering shaft. This shaft has a moulded capital and base, rising from an octagonal plinth that sits on a three-stepped base. The south face of the plinth includes inset metal lettering that reads "TO THE/ MEMORY OF/ OUR GLORIOUS/ DEAD," with the years 1914 - 1919 and 1939 - 1945 inscribed on the south-west and south-east faces of the plinth, respectively.
