Description

Low Edge Farmhouse and the attached barn are located on Ridge Lane in Silsden. The farmhouse dates from the early 17th century, while the barn was likely added in the early 18th century. The building is constructed of rubble brought to course, with dressed quoins and a stone slate roof.

The front of the house is two stories high, with a single-storey aisle or outshut at the rear. It features a two-room front that is double-depth, with a two-storey gabled porch on the left side. The porch has a doorway with composite jambs and a chamfered surround, along with a 2-light double-chamfered mullioned window above on the first floor. The gable is coped with kneelers, and there are small chamfered lights set in the side walls on the first floor.

Throughout the building, there are double-chamfered mullioned windows, with those on the ground floor under a continuous hoodmould that has a straight return to the right-hand end. The front features a 5-light and a 4-light window, with a late 20th-century gabled porch set between them. On the first floor, there are two 3-light windows and two stacks at the ridge.

To the left of the 17th-century porch is an added 17th-century cell, which has a doorway with composite jambs and a chamfered surround, along with a quoined angle and a coped gable. This space is used for agricultural purposes and may have always served that function. The outshut at the rear of the house has two 2-light windows that lack mullions.

To the right, the barn projects forward and features quoins. There is a cart-entry to the left of the outshut under a cat-slide roof, and set back are three doorways with composite jambs and chamfered surrounds.

Inside the house, the main body has stop-chamfered joists and scarf-jointed spine beams supported by a replaced bressumer. There are also two beehive ovens and a salt cupboard.
