Description
Far Stake Hill Barn is a late 17th-century barn that had its roof raised in the early 19th century. It is constructed of random rubble with dressed quoins and features a stone slate roof. The barn is single-aisled and has a cart-entry located within a portal of the aisle, topped with a wooden lintel. In the right-hand re-entrant angle, there is a doorway leading to a stable, which has a monolithic lintel and jamb. To the left of the cart-entry, there is another doorway with composite jambs and a chamfered surround. The gables are coped and include kneelers. The rear of the barn has a small central doorway and a triangular ventilator to the left.
Inside, the barn has three bays and retains its original oak tie-beams, which are complemented by later softwood fish-bone king-posts. One of the tie-beams features a deeply incised date inscription reading "A I W : 1691 AB," making this 17th-century date inscription a rare feature in a barn.
