Description

Clock House, the headmaster's house of Bradford Grammar School, was the main residence of an estate that dates back to the early 17th century and possibly the 16th century. It was acquired by Bradford Grammar School in 1936. The two-storey sandstone "brick" house appears to be late 18th century but incorporates older features from the 17th century.

The south front has five bays and displays chamfered ashlar quoins, a plinth, and a weathered stringcourse that is likely from the 17th century. It features a moulded cornice and a parapet with coping that arches up in the center over an ashlar-framed circular opening, which is partially glazed and is presumed to have held the clock that gives the house its name. Below this is a sundial dated 1657, bearing the initials of John Crabtree, a Manningham yeoman who purchased the estate in 1636. The windows on this front have squared ashlar surrounds and later 19th-century sashes.

There is a moulded jamb doorway from the late 17th century that is now blocked, with a carved frieze featuring a head. Above the doorway is a date stone from 1699 with the initials of Thomas and Elizabeth Crabtree. The gable ends have saddlestones and small shaped kneelers on the north side. In the center of the gables are small three-light chamfered mullion windows with rounded heads, where the center light is taller, and diminutive panelled spandrels. Drip moulds step up over these windows, which likely date from the late 17th century.

Mid-19th century alterations include two-light windows and a castellated porch on the east gable end with a round-headed window above. The rear wing, added in 1895, features a tripartite pedimented window. The main house has a stone slate roof and a large ashlar chimney stack with arcaded panels centered on the ridge.
