Description
Steeton Manor, built around 1894 by Sir Swire-Smith, is a large house designed in the Tudor Revival style. It features dressed stone and a stone slate roof, standing three storeys tall with an attic. The north front is U-shaped, with projecting wings topped by three gables. A porch with a balustraded parapet is situated between the wings, featuring a tall mullioned and transomed stair-window above. Each floor has double-chamfered mullioned windows, and a projecting oriel on the first floor has a cross-window. The gables are coped with finials at the apex, and an embattled parapet links the return walls.
At the rear, the house has two storeys and three attic gables. A two-storey porch with an embattled parapet and finials contains the main entrance doorway, which has a segmental-arched hood carved with the date. To the right, there is a tall stair-window with three lights and four transoms. The ground floor features two mullioned-and-transomed windows with four lights, and above them are three-light windows. The roof has two large stacks. The left-hand return wall displays additional mullioned windows and a prominent projecting stack with multiple offsets and mullioned windows set in the side angles.
To the left of the front, there is a balustrade of Haddon-Hall type, featuring an arched arcade and Gothic coping topped with ball-finials. The steps leading to the lower level at the front have a similar balustrade.
Inside, the entrance stair-hall boasts an open-well staircase with turned balusters, a ramped handrail, and pendentive bosses. The ceilings are panelled and ribbed, with one window showcasing elaborate leaded panes and painted glass. The sitting room and dining room have additional plaster ceilings, with the dining room featuring a particularly elaborate ceiling adorned with pendentive bosses and a rose motif.
