Description
Ferrands Stone is a boundary stone located approximately 15 metres east of Wood Side House, dating from 1713. It is a vertical stone slab with an arched head that is built into a rubble stone wall. The arched head features decorative engraving of the Ferrand crest, which depicts a cubit arm wielding a battle-axe. Below this, there is an inscription in good lettering that reads: "The Soil and Ground of the way Leading from hence to Bingley Bridge belongs to Benjn. Ferrand Esqr. 1713." This stone marks the boundary of the St. Ives estate. The crest is linked to a popular legend about a Knight named Ferrand during the Crusades of 1190 at the Siege of Acre, who, after being left for dead, managed to return to his lines despite being severely injured.
