Description
Nos 1 to 19 on Friendly Street, including No 383 Thornton Road, form an L-plan block of early 19th century cottages, partly built as back-to-backs. This group is part of the same development as the nearby Priestley Street and South Square, the latter of which dates to 1832. The cottages at Nos 1 to 5 feature a south-facing elevation made of sandstone "brick" with hipped stone slate roofs and block brackets at the eaves. They are two storeys tall, increasing to three storeys as they step down the hill from Thornton Road. The windows are two-light square mullions set in squared surrounds, and the doorways have squared jambs. No 383 serves as the return front to Thornton Road, displaying three bays and a doorway with a console bracket cornice. This building is included for its group value.
