Description
The Main Block of Cannon Mill, built in 1826 by Samuel Cannan and originally called Sammy Cannan Mill, is located on the north-west side of Great Horton Road in Bradford. In 1839, the chimney fell, causing significant damage, and the mill was largely rebuilt and extended around 1850 by its new owner, Charles Tetley, who renamed it. The mill is situated at the foot of streets lined with workers' cottages, with the main block running parallel to Great Horton Road.
The main building is a four-storey sandstone structure with twenty bays, likely retaining much of its original 1826 design. Its long façade features two stair turrets topped with pediments, sill bands, moulded stone eaves, and quoin pilasters. The windows are closely set with lintels, including coupled and tripled narrower ones in the turrets, and there are ashlar arched windows with impost bands. To the west, there is an extension of the same height, which likely housed the engine room. This section has quoin pilasters, a rusticated ashlar ground floor with vermiculated piers separating tall round-arched windows and two doors, and three round-arched windows on the upper floor, with a linking impost string on the first floor and segmental arches above the rest. The side windows are tall and round-headed. A gabled and quoined waggon shed, dated 1870, is attached to the east.
To the east of the main block is a detached four-storey building, likely added by Tetley, connected by a linking footbridge. This block features sandstone construction with ashlar quoin pilasters and sill bands that return to a pedimental gable end. The west side has sixteen windows and a pilastered doorway topped with a heavy dentilled pediment.
