Description
Menston Old Hall, also known as Fairfax Hall, is a 17th-century detached house located set back from the road. The building has an L-shaped layout, with the longer section positioned at right angles to the shorter section, which extends from the rear to the left (west). It is constructed of squared, coursed stone and features a stone slab roof. The gable end faces the road and has moulded coping that leads down to tall flanking chimneys with moulded setbacks. A stringcourse runs above the first storey.
The front of the house includes a five-light canted bay window on both the ground and first floors, which has splayed mullions and transoms. There is also a small attic window in the gable that consists of three lights with splayed mullions. On the west side, there are three windows on the upper storey, and on the inner south side, there is one upper storey window, all featuring splayed mullions and round heads. The house was once owned by the Fairfax family, and it is said that Sir Thomas Fairfax, the Parliamentary general, lived here.
