Description
B C D and E Blocks at St Luke's Hospital are additions designed by Lockwood and Mawson, built around 1860-1870 to accommodate the growing population during the trade boom of the 1860s. These four detached, three-storey ranges are arranged at right angles to the rear of the main building and feature similar Italianate detailing that relates to contemporary mill buildings, particularly in the design of the stair turrets. The structures are constructed of sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings, showcasing sill bands, a first-floor impost string, and a bracketed eaves cornice. The first-floor windows are adorned with archivolt keyed arches, while the stair turrets feature narrow round-headed tripartite grouped windows. Each range has a pediment gable that breaks the centre of both fronts. The heavy bracket corniced portals are reminiscent of those on the main building. Notably, D Block includes a doorway with a cornice supported by long carved console brackets. The roofs are covered with slate and feature corniced ashlar chimneys.
