Description
Upperthorpe Public Library is a public library located in Sheffield, built in 1876 and featuring late 20th-century alterations. Designed by E Mitchell Gibbs, the building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and has gabled and hipped slate roofs adorned with decorative crests, coped gables, and finials. The library is designed in the Italianate style and includes a truncated square roof ventilator.
The exterior features a plinth, sill bands, a first-floor band, modillion eaves, and a coped parapet. It is two storeys tall and has a six-window range. A central square tower porch with a hipped roof includes two round-arched, two-light windows on the first floor, which have moulded arches and roundels in their heads. Below these windows is a stone balcony supported by brackets, featuring a roundel-pierced balustrade. The moulded round-arched ashlar doorcase displays a coat of arms in the tympanum and has an inscription on the lintel that reads "Free Public Library Upperthorpe Branch." The entrance has late 20th-century glazed double doors, with steps and a ramp for access.
Each return of the porch has a round-arched two-light window above and a stone mullioned cross casement below. The side bays each contain two round-arched double lancets with moulded heads and roundels, linked by a hood mould. Below these, there are two stone mullioned cross casements. The right gable features a canted stone oriel window with a hipped roof and modillion cornice on the first floor, flanked by a two-light round-arched window and similar single windows, each with a roundel above. Beyond this, there are single light round-arched windows with square panels above containing roundels, all with linked label moulds. Above, a two-light stone mullioned opening with louvres is present, and below it is a segment-headed cross casement flanked by integral brackets to the oriel. On either side of the oriel, there is a single light flat-headed window with a transom. To the right, there is a simpler range that is two storeys tall, featuring an off-centre three-storey gable and seven unequally spaced windows.
The interior has not been inspected. The design of Upperthorpe Public Library is nearly identical to that of Highfield Public Library on London Road, which was also designed by E Mitchell Gibbs.
