Description

Abbeydale House is a house, now used as a store, built around 1848 with mid and late 20th-century alterations. It was designed by Rooke Harrison of Sheffield for John Rodgers, who was the head of Joseph Rodgers & Sons, cutlery manufacturers. The building is in the Italianate style, constructed of stucco and ashlar, and features a hipped slate roof.

The exterior includes a moulded plinth, an impost band, and modillion cornices at the first floor and eaves. It has two storeys plus a basement and a four-window range of plain sashes with panelled surrounds and dentilled cornices. The ground floor is adorned with Ionic pilasters and a central Ionic portico that has three bays, a dentilled cornice, and an open balustrade. This portico covers an eight-panel door with a fanlight, flanked by single plain sashes. On either side of the central entrance, there is a Venetian window. All these openings feature moulded round heads and keystones. To the left, there is a 20th-century door in the basement.

The outside is complemented by a pair of S-curved rendered flanking walls with square piers and slab coping. The right return of the building has four sashes and a two-storey single bay link with an extruded corner leading to an adjoining two-window service wing. To the right, there is a bow window with three round-headed lights. The similar rear elevation has five plain sashes on each floor, and three basement windows on the left have been converted to doors. The interior has not been inspected.
