Description
Carter Knowle Junior School is a board school dating to 1906, designed by Holmes & Watson for the Sheffield Education Committee. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, featuring gabled and hipped slate roofs with various stacks. The building is in an Arts and Crafts style.
The central hall is flanked on all sides by single-storey ranges. A prominent central octagonal wooden bell turret rises, topped with a shallow lead dome and finial; at each corner, a smaller octagonal stone turret is topped with an octagonal louvred ventilator, a shallow lead roof, and a finial. The east gable, facing Bannerdale Road, includes a stone mullioned four-light cross casement, above which is a shouldered gabled single bell turret with volutes and finial. Two segment-arched leaded dormers with transomed glazing bar windows are situated on either side of this gable. The east front has a central gabled through-eaves dormer flanked by single windows. Further gables feature shouldered segmental pediments and three-light windows with label moulds. A basement level contains six segment-headed three-light windows, punctuated by buttresses. In each return angle, a set-back hipped block incorporates four small windows. One block also has a two-light casement and a door. The north front, facing Carter Knowle Road, centres on a gable with a segmental pediment and a three-light window. Through-eaves dormers extend on either side, flanked by single-light windows. A small wing to the left features a segment-headed gable and a two-light mullioned window, while a larger wing to the right is topped with a pedestal and a gabled pediment supporting a three-light mullioned window. A shallow square bay window with a lead roof and a two-light cross casement is located below and to the left. The rear elevation, facing Fossdale Road, mirrors this design. The interior has not been inspected. The partnership of E Holmes and AF Watson (1893-1906) designed several schools for the Sheffield School Board, and this building represents a complete example of their work.
