Description

Tapton Court is a large house, now a university hall of residence, dating to 1868. It was built for JH Andrew, a steel manufacturer, and is accompanied by a terrace wall and a conservatory. The building is constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, topped with slate roofs and featuring decorative ridge, gable, and side wall stacks.

The front of the house has three bays, with a recessed centre flanked by wings that have pedimented features. The central bay contains a plain sash window above a square portico with Corinthian columns, a balustrade, and a double door with sidelights and a fanlight. The wings have round-arched windows with moulded surrounds and dummy balconies. The garden front incorporates a central square tower with multiple stages, a cornice, and a parapet. This tower features round-arched windows with decorative surrounds and a balcony, alongside a doorcase with an elaborate tympanum and a carved stone crest. A projecting wing on the left has a canted bay window and a segment-headed gable above, while a set-back range on the right has a canted stone bay window with pierced balustrade. The return sides feature similar projecting wings with canted bay windows and balustrades, along with a variety of sash windows and a French window.

The adjoining terrace wall is constructed from coursed squared stone and ashlar, with a coped balustrade featuring urns. Steps with balustrade walls and pedestals also lead to the terrace, while a smaller, simpler set of steps are found elsewhere. A half-sunken, hipped conservatory is located on the left return, featuring a cast-iron ridge crest. The interior of the house has not been inspected.
