Description

The caretaker's house and adjoining walls at Carfield Schools were built in 1903, likely by Joseph Norton for the Norton School Board. The structure is made of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof with a single coped gable and rear wall stacks. The gables are shouldered and the building has two storeys plus a basement, with a two-window range. The front of the house includes a small casement window, a door to the left, and a larger plain sash window to the right. The gable end facing Argyle Close has a large plain sash window on each floor, both with cornices. The rear features a small central plain sash window and below it, a small window flanked by larger plain sash windows. The basement has two square hatches with plank doors. The interior has not been inspected. Outside, there is a short wall with chamfered coping and a wrought-iron railing and gate. To the left, there is a square stone pier and a coped wall adjoining the house. At the rear, a dividing wall separates the upper and lower playgrounds, featuring triangular stone coping and two openings with stone dogleg stairs and balustrade walls.
