Description

The memorial and railings, dating from 1871, were designed by James Gamble, incorporating elements designed by Godfrey Sykes. The terracotta was manufactured by M H Blanchard and Sons. The memorial comprises a terracotta column on a stone pedestal topped with an urn finial and relief panels, all enclosed by cast-iron railings. The column has an elaborate design, featuring a moulded base, a Corinthian capital, and three figurative bands depicting the 'Three Ages of Man' separated by fluted bands with decorative foliage. These bands illustrate infancy (children playing and a swaddled baby held by an angel), adulthood (a wedding ceremony), and old age (bearded men thinking, travelling and pointing). Below the capital is a carved band of acanthus leaves. The column sits on a circular, moulded pedestal topped with a bronzed urn, which in turn stands on a high, square pedestal with a moulded plinth on a square base. Four framed, bronzed relief panels are on the pedestal's sides. The west panel has an inscription reading, "THIS MONUMENT WAS / ERECTED IN THE YEAR / 1871 BY THE INHAB / -ANTS OF SHEFFIELD / IN MEMORY OF GODFREY / SYKES THE COLUMN / PLACED UPON THIS / PEDESTAL IS HIS / WORK." The east panel reads, "GODFREY SYKES BORN / AT MALTON IN THE / YEAR 1824 A PUPIL AND / AFTERWARDS MASTER / IN THE SCHOOL OF ART / OF THIS TOWN HE WAS / CALLED TO LONDON IN / THE YEAR 1859 TO SUPER / -INTEND THE DECORA / -TION OF THE SOUTH / KENSINGTON MUSEUM / AND DIED THERE 1866." The south panel features a medallion with a bust of Sykes, and the north panel depicts an artist’s palette, brushes, and canvas. The memorial is enclosed by decorative cast-iron railings with corner posts bearing shaped finials, all standing on a square stone platform with rounded kerbs.
