Description

The tomb of Benjamin Huntsman is located 60 meters southeast of Attercliffe Chapel in Sheffield. It was built in 1760 and features early 19th century and late 20th century additions. The structure is made of ashlar and includes two inscribed slabs that commemorate Benjamin Huntsman, who lived from 1704 to 1776, along with other members of the Huntsman family. At the head of the tomb, there is an early 19th century table tomb that has fluted scroll brackets and a shaped top, although the inscription is now illegible. Surrounding the slabs is a late 20th century kerb, which has a pedestal at the foot end that carries a commemorative plaque. Benjamin Huntsman was known for inventing crucible steel, a significant industry in Sheffield from the late 18th century until the late 20th century. He lived and worked nearby on Worksop Road.
