Description
Carr Wood House is a former vicarage, now serving as a mental handicap hostel, built around 1835 and converted in 1984. The building is constructed of ashlar and dressed stone, topped with a hipped slate roof and featuring two coped stone ridge stacks. It is designed in the Classical Revival style, characterized by a plinth, a first-floor band, a sill band, modillion eaves, and a pediment.
The house has two storeys and a three-window range, with a slightly projecting center beneath the pediment that includes a 12-pane sash window with a moulded surround and cornice. Flanking this are single 12-pane sash windows. A Greek Doric portico leads to a double-leaf glazed door set in a coved surround, with a 15-pane sash window on either side. The right side of the building features similar fenestration with three windows on each floor, while the left side has a round-headed stair window. The rear maintains similar window arrangements, with steps leading to a central taller sash window flanked by engaged columns and a hood. To the right, there is a two-storey service wing with three windows.
Inside, the house features a cantilevered dogleg stone stair with cast-iron balusters and a moulded handrail. Outside, to the left, there is an S-curved wall made of ashlar and brick with slab coping, which contains a round-headed doorway. Adjacent to this, a pair of rusticated square gate piers with pyramidal caps can be found.
