Description
Christ Church is a parish church dating to 1828, designed by Richard Furness, with additions of a choir vestry in 1879 and a chancel in 1895 by John Dodsley Webster. The church is constructed of coursed squared stone and ashlar, with ashlar dressings, and has stone slate and Welsh slate roofs. It is an example of Gothic Revival architecture.
The plan incorporates a chancel, vestries, a nave, a west tower, and a north porch. Externally, the church features quoins, diagonal buttresses topped with pinnacles, and a 2-bay chancel with a sillband. The east end contains a 4-light panel tracery window, with two single lancet windows to the north. The south-east vestry has a canted corner with a door, and a 3-light mullioned window to its east. South-facing walls feature single and 2-light mullioned windows. The crenellated south-west vestry exhibits a pointed doorway to the west and a triangular headed 2-light window to the south. The aisleless nave features a single lancet to the west and two 2-light pointed arch windows to the east. The north side has two similar windows flanked by single lancets, with a single lancet in the east end. The west end contains 2-light pointed arch windows on each side. The three-stage west tower has string courses and a crenellated parapet with four crocketed pinnacles. The first stage has a paired lancet with triangular heads to the west, the second stage a blank clock dial to the west and a triangular headed window to the south, and the bell stage has a double lancet opening on each side, with hoodmoulds; clocks are situated above the north and south lancets. A crenellated north porch features a double chamfered doorway with a bracket lamp above it.
Inside, the church showcases a double chamfered chancel arch with shaft imposts, and a Decorated style wooden screen dating to 1913, with a recess containing organ pipes to its right. The chancel has an arch braced king post roof, and a door to the south. The nave has a strutted queen post roof and double doors to the west. The north porch has a double chamfered doorway and four octagonal cast-iron posts. Fittings include a Decorated style wooden reredos and altar from 1933, a brass tripod lectern dating to 1876, a 19th-century octagonal ashlar pulpit and font, traceried stalls, and cross frame benches. Seven stained glass windows, created in the mid and late 19th century, are present; the east window dates to 1903 and two windows to 1948. Memorials include a brass and wood war memorial plaque, approximately dated 1920.
