Description

A garden enclosure wall with attached steps and gatepiers, dating to circa 1700, originally for John Mirfin of Slade Hooton Hall. The wall is constructed of coursed, squared limestone with ashlar gatepiers. It forms an elongated rectangular enclosure with steps leading to a gateway on the western end. The quoined walling has moulded copings, and the northern wall is higher than the southern. The western gateway has a tiered flight of semicircular steps leading to 20th-century double gates, which are not considered to be of special interest. The square gatepiers feature sunken-panelled shafts, cornices, and pulvinated finial plinths, although the finials have been removed. The gatepiers are similar to those found in the front garden wall of Slade Hooton Hall. The enclosure wall is included in the listing for its group value.
