Description
The stable and remains of the attached barn, located immediately to the south-west of Slade Hooton Hall, date from 1702 and 1705 and were built for John Mirfin of Slade Hooton Hall. The structure features coursed, square limestone with Welsh slate and pantile roofs. It is a two-storey, three-bay stable-block, with a two-storey barn attached to the rear-right, of which only two bays remain.
The stable-block has chamfered ashlar quoins and a doorway on the right with a bolection-moulded architrave beneath a 2-light mullioned overlight in a square-faced surround. There are inserted garage doors to the left of the centre, along with a cross window in a raised ashlar surround on the left. A central keyed oculus with keystones is inscribed 'I. M. / 17 / 02'. The building features large, voluted kneelers and moulded gable copings.
On the right return, there is a window with a square-faced surround on the left and an inserted window to the right, along with a gable oculus. The attached barn on the right has a quoined segmentally-arched waggon entrance with a later opening on the left beneath a first-floor hatch with an arched lintel; the right part of the barn has been demolished. The rear of the barn, opposite the waggon entrance, has a keystone inscribed 'I. M. / 1705', and external steps rise on the right to a door at the rear of the stable block. The stables are depicted in Samuel Buck's sketch of Slade Hooton Hall from around 1720.
