Description

The pair of cottages at 35 and 37 Morthen Road, Wickersley, were refronted in the early 19th century, although they likely originated as late 18th-century cottages. Originally, part of the building served as a Primitive Methodist Chapel. The cottages are constructed of ashlar sandstone, with a Welsh slate roof. They are two storeys high and originally had two bays, with a single-bay extension set back on the right, forming part of a rear range. Each cottage is fronted by a semicircular-bay projection. These bays have flat casements with glazing bars, stone sills, and lintels set within the curve on both ground and upper floors. The ground-floor lintel of the left bay is inscribed "PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHAPEL", while the upper-floor lintel contains a weathered inscription that appears to quote a hymn. A low roof is concealed behind a coped parapet. The right-hand extension to the rear range features a bowed casement in a rendered panel beneath a smaller casement. The rear range has coped gables with a brick stack at the centre of the junction with the curved-bay additions, and a further stack on the right end of the addition.
