Description
This is a pair of grave stones for the Bower family, located approximately 10 metres south of the nave of the Church of St. Alban. They date from around 1714 and are made of red sandstone. The main stone features a raised rectangular slab with an additional slab at its foot. It has fine inscriptions commemorating Sarah, the daughter of John Bower, who died in 1714 at the age of 18; Benjamin, the son, who died in 1718 at the age of 16; and Elizabeth, the wife, who died in 1718 at the age of 60. These inscriptions are set beneath a rope-moulded arch adorned with florets and scale ornament in the spandrels, while the side panels display stylised sinuous foliage. At the foot of the stones is a plain slab dedicated to John Bower, who passed away in 1737 at the age of 65. This pair of grave stones is a good example of its kind.
