Description

Bedgreave Old Mill is the remains of a corn mill, dating from the 16th or 17th century, and was undergoing reconstruction at the time of the last survey. It is constructed from thinly-coursed sandstone and had no roof at that time. The building is single storey and consists of a single cell, featuring large quoins. The intact north gable has an inserted doorway on the right and a double-chamfered, 2-light mullioned window in the gable, which is now bricked up. The opposite end wall has been rebuilt and includes a large, quoined opening spanned by an old tie beam, with no gable walling present. On the right return, the side wall features a low slit window beneath the opening, which has a square-faced surround.

Inside, there is a central tie beam with soffit mortices and old wall plates. Historical records mention a mill at Bedgreave in a settlement to the Darcy family in 1631. Although the building appears to be post-medieval, it is designed in the form of a medieval single-cell mill, which would have had grindstones raised on a platform at one end, illuminated by side-wall windows, with the drive coming from a pit beneath. Surviving examples of such medieval structures are exceedingly rare.
