Description
This T-shaped range of buildings, located on the west side of the Stable Block, serves as ancillary structures that have been converted into offices and a library. Constructed in the late 18th and 19th centuries for the Wentworth estate, the buildings are made of coursed, dressed sandstone and feature a roof of Westmorland slate, with some areas replaced by Welsh slate. The irregular T-shaped layout includes a central link block with wings extending to the north and south, designed to complement the Stable Block and Mews.
The link block is a single-storey structure with a central passageway. It has large three-piece lintels that form a flat arch, with a secondary round arch added on the south side. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, while the north side features three large square-headed openings with ashlar surrounds, now fitted with 20th-century glazing.
The southern wing has a symmetrical facade with a central section that rises two storeys and consists of 15 bays arranged in a 5:5:5 pattern. It has a plinth and pilaster strips between the outer bays. The central door is panelled and has an overlight, with 20th-century doors in bays 1, 12, and 15. The other windows are 16-pane sashes with flush sills and flat arches. A deep band runs along the central part, and the first floor has unequally-hung 12-pane sashes. The roof is hipped.
The northern wing has an asymmetrical facade, with a central section that is two storeys high, while the rest is single-storey, arranged in a 2:4:3 bay pattern. It features a plinth and sash windows with glazing bars and flat arches. The eaves band extends across the two-storey section, which has an added first floor with unequally-hung 9-pane sashes, and the lintels are tooled as voussoirs. The roof is also hipped. A 20th-century addition on the front right is not of special interest. Overall, this range of buildings contributes to the enclosure of two courtyards on the west side of the Stable Block and is included for its group value.
