Description

Nos 3 and 5 on Main Street are two dwellings that likely have a core dating from the 16th century, with later encasement and extension in the late 17th century. The building features some internal timber framing, coursed rubble sandstone, and a roof made of stone slate and pantiles. It stands two storeys high and has three bays, with partial front and rear outshuts flanking the roadside gable end.

The original front faces south and includes large quoins. There is a blocked, quoined doorway on the far right, with a straight joint in the masonry to the left, flanked by the remains of double-chamfered, formerly mullioned windows on each floor. A 20th-century door and window are present in the outshut on the left, and there is a brick ridge stack on the pantile roof, which has a lower ridge on the right.

At the rear, there is a chamfered, quoined doorway leading to No 5 on the right. The left return, facing the roadside, features a 20th-century three-light casement with glazing bars, shutters, a projecting stone sill, and an old dripstone on each floor. There is also a 2-light casement on the right in a double-chamfered surround, and an added brick stack rises from the left slope of the roof, which retains some gable copings. The right return has a blocked 2-light double-chamfered gable window with a projecting sill and dripstone.

Inside No 5, the framing of the central truss and wall posts is exposed, along with principal-rafter roof trusses. Notes on the timber framing can be found in the South Yorkshire County Ancient Monuments and Sites Record in Sheffield, primary index No 1579.
