Description

The entrance gateway and attached railings to Ravenfield Hall Farm date from the mid-18th century and are likely the work of architect John Carr for the Ravenfield Hall estate. Constructed from ashlar sandstone, the gateway features wrought-iron railings and gates. It includes a double gate and side gates, with both inner and outer gate piers. The attached railings are set on quadrant plinth walls that curve to align with the roadside and end at piers.

The main gate piers have re-entrant corners, a plinth, a band-rusticated shaft with a triglyph frieze, and a cornice beneath a block topped with paterae and a pedimented cornice that supports a pineapple finial. The outer gate piers are square and similar to the main piers but have lower cornices topped with ball finials that feature Greek key ornament. The main gates are designed with alternating wavy and straight dog-bars and diagonal braces, while the top rails have ring ornaments and rounded finials, along with scrolled stiles.

There are remains of side gates that feature spear-headed dog bars and pendant decorations on the top rail. The coped quadrant walls have plain railings that extend approximately 70 meters to the north and south, terminating at ashlar piers with sunken panels and cornices; the northern pier retains a vase finial. This gateway served as the principal entrance to Ravenfield Hall, which has since been demolished.
