Description
The Patrick Stirling Memorial Lamp and Drinking Fountain is a memorial structure built in 1890, commissioned by the drivers and firemen of the Great Northern Railway. It is made from polished pink and grey granite, resting on a sandstone ashlar base.
Standing at 4.5 metres high, the fountain features a shallow, octagonal ashlar step and a high, octagonal chamfered base. The drinking fountain consists of a circular granite column on a moulded plinth, which has four semi-circular drinking basins that project outward. Above these basins are four grey granite plaques, each inscribed, with pink granite colonettes featuring moulded capitals that support a moulded cap.
The first plaque reads: "THIS / FOUNTAIN / WAS / PRESENTED TO / THE TOWN OF / DONCASTER / BY / THE ENGINEMEN / AND FIREMEN / EMPLOYED ON." The second plaque states: "THE / GREAT NORTHERN / RAILWAY, / IN / COMMEMORATION / OF THE 70TH / BIRTHDAY OF P. STIRLING, ESQ. / C.E. / LOCOMOTIVE." The third plaque notes: "ENGINEER / TO THE COMPANY / TO MARK THE / RESPECT / AND ESTEEM / IN WHICH HE IS / HELD BY THEM / JUNE 29TH / 1890." The fourth plaque indicates: "OPENED / BY / MRS STIRLING / AUGUST 11TH / J.F. CLARK, ESQ. / MAYOR." Atop the moulded cap is a pinnacle finial with a fluted stem and moulded plinth, which is crowned by a replica lamp featuring Doncaster’s lion at its top.
