Description

The Grand Theatre, now known as the Top Rank Bingo Hall, is a theatre building constructed in 1899 by JP Briggs. It features a brick structure with a painted stucco facade and a slate roof. The main front, which is curved and three stories high, faces south. The ground floor is designed with paired Doric pilasters and round arched double doorways, although only the left section is visible due to a single storey addition from the late 20th century that obscures part of the facade. Above this, a projecting balcony extends the entire length of the facade, adorned with ornate iron railings.

The upper two stories are distinguished by giant, paired fluted Ionic pilasters, with a central pair flanking a round arch that contains a niche. On either side of this arch are broader arches, each featuring a segment headed window. Between the outer arches, there are round headed, glazed double doors, with smaller doors at either end. The top floor includes a central circular window flanked by four blind, round headed arches, with three round headed windows on either side, each accompanied by single flanking windows. The entire facade is crowned by a deep entablature with a balustraded parapet that has finials, and a taller central panel topped with a curved pediment.

Inside, the theatre retains two curved galleries with seating and elaborately decorated fronts, a decorated plaster ceiling, and a proscenium arch that leads to the former stage. Classical panels are located on either side of the former stage, topped with pediments. The ground floor has been modified to feature a false flat floor. Despite its conversion into a bingo hall, many original theatre features remain intact.
