Description
Nos 33 and 35, formerly known as the Nag's Head, is a shop and former public house located on St Sepulchre Gate in Doncaster, built around 1930. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar with a polished black granite shop front, and it has a concealed roof. It stands three storeys high and features a single bay.
The ground floor showcases the original black granite shop front, which is stepped at the top. There is a central recessed glazed door made of bronze, adorned with enamelled medallions on the glazing bars. Flanking the door are canted windows with bronze surrounds, set above granite plinths. To the left, there is a plate glass window with an angled head, and above it, a hexagonal opening with scrolled wrought ironwork. To the right, there is a door with a similar angled head; the original granite here is now covered by tiling, and there is a 20th-century hood above it.
On the first floor, a wide stepped recess is divided by two full-height stone mullions, containing three tall casement windows with original Art Deco metal glazing. Above these, there are three square panels, each stepped in five times to a small central square. The second floor has three 20th-century replacement casements in the centre, with similar flanking windows.
At the top, there is a large projecting panel inscribed with 'The Nags Head Hotel'. The panels on either side of the central recess resemble quasi-pilasters, featuring a deep fillet at the top and a frieze above that includes central horse heads flanked by fluting and stepped capitals. This building is noted for being an unusually stylish and complete example of provincial Art Deco architecture.
