Description

A department store and offices built between 1938 and 1940, designed by T H Johnson & Son for the Doncaster Co-operative Society Ltd. The building is steel-framed with yellow brick and pale blue Vitriolite tile cladding, standing five storeys high. The central section is five storeys and clad in brick, while the lower three-storey side wings are clad in Vitriolite tiles. A glazed central staircase tower features a projecting cornice. The ground floor has continuous plate glass shop fronts with bronzed metal frames and black Vitriolite cladding below. The set-back shop entrances have curved side windows and are sheltered by a continuous canopy. The lower wings have two continuous rows of metal-framed windows and a flat, coped parapet. The central section exhibits banded brickwork, with strips of windows on the third floor within continuous raised surrounds. Larger windows with similar surrounds and pale blue Vitriolite panels between them are found on the fourth floor. The north facade, facing Printing Office Street, has a projecting four-storey block clad in pale blue Vitriolite tiles. The south facade, facing Duke Street, is curved and includes a projecting block to the east with a large commercial lorry entrance at ground floor level, and two pairs of windows to each of the three upper floors, all clad in pale blue Vitriolite tiles.

Inside, a central staircase features an inner glass brick elevator shaft and surrounding stairs with polished stone facing and a metal balustrade. A rear staircase has similar polished stone facing and an aluminium balustrade.
