Description

No. 43 High Street is a Grade II listed building located in Doncaster. It was built in 1826 by architects Woodhead and Hurst as the facade for the former Subscription Rooms. The original rooms behind the facade were demolished around 1970. The building features painted ashlar stonework and has a concealed roof. It is a single bay with a tall single storey.

The facade includes a distyle portico in antis, which has a pair of central Ionic columns flanked by Tuscan antae. There is a plain entablature with a moulded cornice, and the parapet has a moulded plinth and coping, along with three rectangular panels. The side panels are balustraded, while the central panel is adorned with a laurel leaf swag and drops hanging from moulded paterae. At the top center, there are anthemion acroteria on a stepped base.

Inside the portico, there is a grid beamed ceiling with moulded cornices. The rear wall features three blocked openings flanked by full-height pilasters, with recessed rectangular panels above the side openings and a circular recess above the central one, which has scrolled decoration on the sides.

Originally, the building served as the Subscription or Betting Rooms, where 100 members paid a guinea a year. It was one of the largest gambling centers in the country during race week, hosting games like Hazard and Roulette. After gaming became illegal, the building was repurposed for various functions until most of it was demolished. It is partly listed for its historical interest, and photographs of the original interiors are held in the National Monuments Record.
