Description

No 44 High Street is a house that has been converted into shops and offices. It dates from the mid-18th century and has some alterations from the 19th century. The building is made of red brick with stone and gauged brick decorations, topped by a graduated slate roof. It stands three storeys high and has four bays.

The ground floor features a 19th-century shop front that spans the full width of the building, divided into two sections: the main part covers the three right-hand bays, while a narrower section is on the left. The shop front includes 20th-century plate-glass windows set within a 19th-century surround, which is supported by three fluted Ionic half columns that hold up a simple entablature. Above the columns, there are dosserets topped with urn finials on panelled bases. In the centre of the right-hand section of the entablature, there is a large raised block with a cornice, topped by a gilded eagle on a stepped base. On either side of this block, the frieze features raking cornices that create a shallow pediment effect.

The first and second floors each have four plate-glass sash windows, which are fitted with projecting stone sills and flat gauged brick arches. A moulded dentilled ashlar cornice runs along the top, and there are stone copings on moulded kneelers at the gables, along with tall brick end stacks.
