Description
The terrace steps and urns located to the south and west of Brodsworth Hall were built between 1866 and 1867 for Charles Thellusson. Made of marble, there are four sets of steps: three along the south garden front and one opposite the west front. Each set features well-carved greyhounds, which are lying down and facing inward, flanking a seven-rise flight of steps with ashlar-coped side walls that lead up to broad-rimmed urns on square bases. Matching urns are also placed separately at each end of the south and west terrace. These features were commissioned in Italy by Chevalier Casentini, who also provided many marble sculptures for the interior of Brodsworth Hall. Account books referenced by Mark Girouard note a consignment in 1867 that included "marble steps and figures and Fountain vase in Pleasure grounds."
