Description

Bramwith Hall is a small country house built in the 18th century and rebuilt in the early 19th century. It features a stuccoed brick exterior and a Westmorland slate roof. The house has three storeys and a five-bay garden front, with a two-storey, two-bay addition on the right side. The building has a plinth and a part-glazed, panelled door with an overlight that includes decorative glazing bars, all set within a Doric stone porch that has a full entablature with floral metopes. The flanking bays contain unequally-hung 15-pane sash windows.

On the first floor, there is a band and projecting sills beneath tall sashes with glazing bars. The second floor features projecting sills for short 6-pane sashes. The eaves have a band and the roof is hipped with end stacks. The addition on the right has two 20th-century casements with glazing bars on the ground floor and a central 16-pane sash window above, with a hipped roof and a tall end stack on the right.

At the rear, the house has a symmetrical three-bay entrance front with a part-glazed panelled door set within an 18th-century scrolled and eared architrave, topped by a consoled pediment. The flanking sash windows with glazing bars have projecting sills and cambered heads. On the first floor, there is a tall 18-pane stair window with a floating pediment, while the other windows match those on the front. The right return features a round-headed window for the upper landing of the service stair, and a bell is attached to the wall on the right.

Inside, the entrance hall includes a wooden staircase with a scrolled ironwork balustrade and door architraves that have floral corner blocks. The front-left through-room is adorned with a Corinthian-columned screen and a basket archway, along with enriched cornices and acanthus ceiling features. The front-right room has a moulded ashlar fireplace, and another fireplace at the rear features fine carving of grape vines. The service stair has turned newels and square-section balusters.
