Description
Bramwith Bridge is an early 19th-century swing bridge that has been altered in the 20th century, located on the River Don Navigation. It is constructed from dressed gritstone, with a steel and wooden bridge platform added later. The bridge features stone abutment walls on each bank, with a manually-operated pivoting mechanism located in an arcuate recess on the south bank. The north abutment has concave side walls and two rounded piers on each side, while the south abutment wall is convex. Surrounding the bridge are associated winch mechanisms, steps, and a block that supports the bridge when it is fully open. This bridge is a well-preserved example, as most others have either been replaced by lifting bridges or removed entirely.
