Description

This bridge, built between 1832 and 1833, spans Ings Dike and is located approximately 200 metres south of Norton Common Farm. It is constructed from horizontally-tooled, deeply-coursed magnesian limestone and features a single span. The bridge has a rusticated segmental arch that is set in a curve and springs from vertical abutment walls. Above the arch, there is a band that connects to the projecting end piers of the parapet, which is topped with domed copings. This bridge is considered the best of several small bridges that are likely original to the Doncaster-Selby road, which was turnpiked following an act on 6th June 1832. A copy of the Doncaster-Selby turnpike statute can be found in the Doncaster Library Service Archives on King Edwards Road, Balby.
