Description
The Church of St Paul is a parish church built in 1936, designed by Charles Frederick Moxon of Barnsley. It features orange and yellow brick with concrete dressings, flat concrete roofs, and a domed copper roof. The church has a square nave plan, a rectangular chancel, and a curved eastern apse. The south entrance includes a projecting single-storey flat-roofed porch with three central round arches and two small flanking windows. The nave is set back and has five tall round-headed windows arranged in a graduated curve. To the right is the projecting Lady Chapel, which has three round-arched openings with windows and raised panels below, along with a single round-headed chancel window set back. The chancel features a tall round-headed window on each side and a round-ended apse with five small windows and banded brickwork. There are also projecting single-storey parish rooms with sets of three windows. The north entrance has a round-headed doorway with double plank doors and a fanlight, flanked by two small windows on each side. Set back to the right is a central baptistery with three windows. The unfinished west front has a simple blank wall with a large brick arch and pilasters on either side, a central doorway with a plank door, and above it, a single tall round-headed window.
Inside, the church has a plastered and stepped dome resting on exposed brick arches, featuring a large Art Deco style chandelier. The interior includes contemporary wooden parquet floors, pews, inlaid choir stalls, and an octagonal pulpit. The raised chancel has central steps and low brick side walls, with pairs of polished wooden double doors throughout. The altar is plain with a polished wooden altar rail and a single tall black candlestick. The baptistery contains a stone-carved font with an elaborate wooden font cover. All windows feature contemporary abstract patterned stained glass.
