Description

This is a former school building, now converted into 63 apartments, constructed in 1909. It was designed by Buckland & Haywood-Farmer of Birmingham. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and has a Westmorland late roof. It is designed in a Free Classical style.

The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical composition. The central seven-bay block is linked by three recessed narrow bays to three-bay blocks on each side, with two-storey wings extending further out. The main building features alternate ashlar quoins and an ashlar basement, with twelve-pane casements in the basement set within segmental heads.

A swept staircase leads to a central portal with delicate turned balusters. The entrance has a double, panelled door with a tripartite overlight. Pilaster jambs with voluted capitals support a large, open, segmental pediment featuring a shield with foliage. The ground floor windows are twelve-pane sashes in architraves; those flanking the door are narrower, with eight panes, and each has an ashlar apron. The first-floor windows are similar, topped with open triangular pediments set in a panel of chequered ashlar and brickwork. Deep ashlar aprons connect these first-floor heads to the ground-floor windows. The parapet features moulded coping. A hipped roof tops the structure, with ornamental stacks on either side. A central wooden lantern has round-arched openings, open triangular pediments, and a domed roof. The three-bay side blocks are similar in design with central bays marked by pilasters. The ground-floor central window has a triangular pediment, and the window above features a shallow segmental pediment whose base continues across the front as an eaves cornice with a parapet above. Tall brick stacks are present. Hipped roofs cover the side blocks.

To the left, a two-storey wing boasts a wide tripartite window with pilaster jambs and engaged column mullions supporting an open segmental pediment with a cartouche in the tympanum. An ashlar panel reading 'ERECTED AD 1909' sits on the first floor, flanked by small windows. The right wing is plainer and incorporates a corner chimney/tower.

The rear of the central block has large, round-arched ground-floor windows with glazing bars, and six-light first-floor windows with two transoms and open segmental pedimented heads. The end bays have triangular pediments. An octagonal wooden lantern with Doric columns and a domed roof is also present. Barnsley High School for Girls was founded in 1905 and initially housed in temporary buildings before relocating to this new building when it opened in November 1909. The construction of the new building cost £25,259.
