Description
Take-off stone located approximately 250 metres south of the junction with Mossley Road is a late 18th-century marker stone. It is a stone post with a rounded top featuring well-crafted incised letters that read 'Take Off'. Below this inscription is an Ordnance Survey bench mark. The stone is set into a dry-stone wall and is positioned at the top of the steep Mortimer Road, which was established following an Act passed in 1770. The road, constructed by Mr. Mortimer, did not meet the necessary standards for toll enforcement. Consequently, Langsett township, responsible for maintaining the road, provided a horse to assist wagons up the hill, and at the stone, the horse was 'taken-off' to return to the bottom.
