Description
This graveslab, dating from around 1711, is located approximately 8 metres south west of the tower of the Church of All Saints in Silkstone. It is made of sandstone and features incised decoration along the edges, with a dividing line that runs lengthways down the stone, each section topped with arched decoration. The left section is dedicated to Elizabeth, the daughter of John Couldwell of Simhill, who died on 28th December 1711 at the age of 19. Below this, in later lettering, is the dedication to Sarah, the wife of James Hirst, who died on 15th September 1740. The right section is dedicated to John, the son of John Couldwell of Simhill, who died on 23rd October 1711, and also to James Hirst, who died on 10th January 1771 at the age of 81 years.
