Description
The barn and cowhouse at New Hall Farm, located approximately 50 metres east of the farmhouse, likely dates from the early 17th century and has been altered over time. It is constructed of coursed, squared sandstone and features a Welsh slate roof. The building is partly two-storey and consists of five internal bays.
On the farmyard side, there are large quoins, and a chamfered, quoined, Tudor-arched doorway located to the left of centre, which now has a boarded door. To the left, there is a partially blocked door opening, while to the right, there are two altered ground-floor openings with a boarded loft door above. At the far right, there is a wide ground-floor doorway with a concrete lintel, and several blocked slit vents can be seen.
The left return features a chamfered, quoined opening with doors leading to both the ground floor and loft, and there is 20th-century weatherboarding on the gable. Inside, the reveals to the slit vents are deeply splayed, and the roof structure is impressive, featuring five broad-spanning king-post trusses, one of which is set in the weatherboarded gable. Each truss has a massive tie-beam and jowled-head king post, with raking struts connecting the tie-beam to the principal rafter, except for one truss that has struts from the king post. There are two trenched purlins on each slope, and straight braces extend from the king post to the ridge, which has a central scarf joint. The rafters have been renewed. The attached farm buildings are not of special interest.
