Description

This summer house, dated 1686, was built for Elkanah Rich and is located approximately 20 meters northeast of Number 1 Bullhouse on Manchester Road in Penistone. The structure is made of thinly-coursed rubble and features a stone slate roof. It is a single-storey building with a basement and has a square, single-cell plan. The corners are accented with quoins, and stone steps lead up to a six-panel double door. The doorway is framed by a moulded surround and a slightly arched lintel that is inscribed with the date "1686." A continuous drip moulding runs above the door. The eaves are supported by modillion brackets, and the hipped roof is finished with stone ridges and ball finials at the corners and apex. There are double-chamfered cross-windows on the rear and each side return, along with a basement door on the right return. Inside, the summer house features oak panelling that is similar to that found in the hall, which may date from the 18th century.
