Description
This is a Boer War memorial plaque, dating from around 1902, attached to the north-west side of the former Town Hall, situated at its junction with High Street in Wombwell. The plaque was created by G. Steele, a sculptor from Wombwell. It is constructed with a well-carved sandstone surround, and the panel itself is likely made of granite. Decorative corbels carved with lion’s heads and Yorkshire roses are positioned on either side of the inscription ‘DUTY NOBLY DONE’. An inscribed panel within a moulded architrave is flanked by half-detached figures of soldiers in battle dress depicted before draped flags. A shallow cornice sits beneath an ogee-headed feature, which incorporates a unicorn crest carved within foliage, with a crown at its apex. The inscription dedicates the plaque to the people of Wombwell who served in the Boer War of 1899-1902, and lists their names.
