Description

Nos 1-7 on Station Avenue is a terrace of cottages built between 1902 and 1905 by the architects Parker and Unwin for the Joseph Rowntree Village Trust. The buildings are constructed of brick, which has been whitewashed on the wings and first floor, with weatherboarding on the gables and a pantile roof. The cottages feature a parlour and living room, with side entry to the end cottages and direct entry to the middle cottages. They are two storeys high and have a symmetrical facade with eight first-floor windows and two-bay gabled cross wings at either end. The doors have been replaced, and standard "New Earswick" window panes are present throughout. The spinal range includes additional porches flanked by 3-light and 4-light casements. The wings have pairs of 4-light windows with entrances in porches on the sides. On the first floor, there are 3-light gabled half dormers in the central range and 4-light casements in the gables. The original stacks have been removed. New Earswick is particularly significant for its role in the development of low-cost housing in Britain. The experiences and practices established here were incorporated into the Tudor Walters Report of 1918, which played a key role in the passing of the Addison Act of 1919. Plans from New Earswick also influenced the Government Manual on low-cost housing that followed the Act.
