Description
1 and 2 Western Terrace are a pair of semi-detached houses built between 1902 and 1905 by Parker and Unwin for the Joseph Rowntree Village Trust. They are constructed from whitewashed brick and have a pantile roof. The houses feature a living room that extends into a wide rectangular bay at the front, with direct entry to the side and a scullery at the rear.
The buildings are two storeys tall with a symmetrical facade, highlighted by a wide central gable that projects forward. Each house has two first-floor windows, with small-paned windows throughout. The central area has small 2-light windows flanked by projecting bay windows, arranged in a pattern of 1:4:1 beneath a hipped roof. On the first floor, there are 3-light casements in the central gable, flanked by 2-light casements. The hipped roof has had its stacks removed.
This design is unique in New Earswick, which is significant for its role in the development of low-cost housing in Britain. The practices and experiences from New Earswick were influential in the Tudor Walters Report of 1918, which helped lead to the Addison Act of 1919. Plans from this area also shaped the Government Manual on low-cost housing that followed the Act.
