Description

26 and 28 Chestnut Grove are a pair of semi-detached houses built between 1909 and 1914 by Parker and Unwin for the Joseph Rowntree Village Trust. Constructed from brick with a French tile roof, these two-storey homes feature a through living room plan and have four first-floor windows topped by a pair of central gables. The doors have been replaced, with the door to No 28 being glazed. The houses showcase standard "New Earswick" window panes with soldier arches on the ground floor. The central section has a pair of 3-light casements flanked by doors beneath canopies, while the outer bays contain single-pane windows. On the first floor, there are 2-light casements in the gables and low 2-light casements in the outer bays. The original stacks have been removed. New Earswick is particularly significant for its role in the development of low-cost housing in Britain. The experiences and practices established here were influential in the Tudor Walters Report of 1918, which helped lead to the Addison Act of 1919. Plans from New Earswick also shaped the Government Manual on low-cost housing that followed the Act.
