Description

66 and 68 Chestnut Grove are a pair of semi-detached houses built around 1909 to 1914 by Parker and Unwin for the Joseph Rowntree Village Trust. The houses are constructed of brick and feature a French tile roof. They have a through living room plan and are two stories high, with four first-floor windows and a pair of central gables. The doors have been replaced, and the houses feature standard "New Earswick" window panes with soldier arches on the ground floor. The central section has a pair of 3-light casements flanked by doors beneath canopies, with single-pane windows in the outer bays. On the first floor, there are 2-light casements in the gables and low 2-light casements in the outer bays. The chimney stacks have been removed. New Earswick is particularly significant for its role in the development of low-cost housing in Britain. The experiences and practices from this area were incorporated into the Tudor Walters Report of 1918, which played a key role in the passing of the Addison Act of 1919. Plans from New Earswick also influenced the Government Manual on low-cost housing that followed the Act.
