Description
Nos 61 and 63 on Chestnut Grove are pairs of cottages built between 1909 and 1914 by Parker and Unwin for the Joseph Rowntree Village Trust. Constructed from brick with a French tile roof, these two-storey cottages feature a lobby entry leading to a living room and scullery. Each cottage has two first-floor windows and a central gable that is weatherboarded. The cottages have replacement doors and standard "New Earswick" window panes throughout. They also include two 4-light canted bay windows flanked by doors beneath blocked round arches. On the first floor, the gable contains a pair of 3-light casements, and the roof is hipped. The original stacks have been removed. New Earswick is particularly significant for its role in the development of low-cost housing in Britain, with practices established here influencing the Tudor Walters Report of 1918 and the subsequent Addison Act of 1919.
